CARE Court Now Statewide, Upcoming Resources Public Defenders

December 5, 2024

As of Monday, December 2, 2024, all 58 California counties are now implementing the Community Assistance, Recovery, and Empowerment (CARE) Court program. Since its creation through the passage SB 1338 (Chapter 319, Statutes of 2022), CARE Court has rolled out through a phased approach. The first cohort of seven counties – Glenn, Orange, Riverside, San Diego, San Francisco, Stanislaus, and Tuolumne – began implementation on October 1, 2023. Los Angeles County joined the early implementing counties on December 1, 2023, followed by San Mateo County on July 1, 2024, and Kern County on October 1, 2024. Read Governor Newsom’s press release here. Access relevant information and resources, including regarding training and technical assistance, via the Department of State Health Care Services’ website here.

Additionally, the Office of the State Public Defender’s (OSPD) Indigent Defense Improvement Division (IDID), in partnership with Homebase, will be providing several consultation and discussion meetings for those interested in CARE Court respondents’ counsel and their leaders. Sessions will offer connections to local housing resources and tailored advice about how to expand the scope of the resources that CARE Court might be able to provide your clients. Attendees are encouraged to drop in and bring questions.
