Federal Administration on Community Living Releases New Reports on Older Adults

June 13, 2024

On May 30, 2024, the Administration of Community Living (ACL), located within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), released a new report: Aging in the United States: A Strategic Framework of a National Plan on Aging. The new Strategic Framework lays the groundwork for a coordinated effort to create a national set of recommendations for advancing healthy aging and age-friendly communities.

The report, which also reflects input from community partners and leaders in the aging services network, sets the stage to advance national best practices for service delivery, support development and strengthen partnership, identify solutions for removing barriers to health and independence for older adults, and more. Working together through the Interagency Coordinating Committee (ICC) on Healthy Aging and Age-Friendly Communities, the report includes contributions from eight HHS divisions, as well as the U.S. Departments of: Agriculture, Housing and Urban Development, Labor, Transportation, and Veterans Affairs; the Social Security Administration; and AmeriCorps. In the coming months, the ICC will engage with stakeholders across the nation to explore the opportunities and issues in the Strategic Framework and inform the development of the national plan on aging.

The ACL also released the 2023 Profile of Older Americans last month. The Profile of Older Americans is an annual summary of critical statistics related to the older population in the United States. Relying primarily on data offered by the U.S. Census Bureau, the Profile illustrates the shifting demographics of Americans age 65 and older. It includes key topic areas such as income, living arrangements, education, and health. The 2023 Profile includes a special section on living in the community.
