HHS Policy Committee: Homelessness/Health Care

May 18, 2018

The CSAC Health and Human Services Policy Committee met yesterday morning as part of the 2018 CSAC Legislative Conference. Orange County Supervisor Andrew Do gave the committee a sense of the magnitude of the homeless issue, as well as the challenges and progress in his county. The policy committee also heard from a panel of experts on health care reform ideas that might take place here in California.

Laurel Lucia provided the committee with an overview of the policy choices in California today, while Anthony Wright walked the committee through their ambitious legislative push as part of the Care4All Coalition’s effort to enact universal and affordable health care in California. Finally, Tom Joseph, with Paragon Government Relations representing CSAC in Washington, DC, provided the federal context, which is thankfully quiet at this time.

Additionally, staff provided the committee with a brief update on recent In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) implementation efforts. The HHS Legislative Team provided a legislative update on significant health and human services bills. The Policy Committee also learned more about the numerous HHS budget proposals included in the Governor’s May Revision that are important to counties and the team provided an update on CSAC’s engagement and next steps on the significant proposals.

Agenda materials for the meeting, including memos and resources, are available here.
