National Association of Counties Releases Comprehensive Artificial Intelligence Report and Toolkit

July 18, 2024

The National Association of Counties (NACo) hosted their 2024 Annual Conference in Florida from July 12 – 15, with strong attendance from CSAC and the California county family.

During the conference, NACo’s Artificial Intelligence Exploratory Committee released a comprehensive toolkit to help counties consider, adopt, and regulate the use of generative artificial intelligence. The complete report is available here: AI County Compass: A Comprehensive Toolkit for Local Governance and Implementation of Artificial Intelligence. Notably, the report delineates areas of focus and relevance for county elected officials, county CIOs and IT staff, and county administrative staff. The report also includes the results of NACO’s spring 2024 survey on county use of artificial intelligence and policy recommendations for county governments to consider.

As a reminder, the CSAC artificial intelligence steering committee and working group met throughout the first half of 2024 and developed CSAC’s guiding principles for the use of artificial intelligence. The CSAC artificial intelligence steering committee and working group have also drafted County Platform language regarding artificial intelligence that will guide the organization’s advocacy. The complete current CSAC County Platform is available here. The draft County Platform language on artificial intelligence will be circulated for review and comment later this year and will be acted on during the CSAC Annual Meeting in November 2024. Registration for the 2024 Annual Meeting is open.

Please contact Eric Lawyer, Legislative Advocate and Jessica Sankus, Principal Fiscal and Policy Analyst, with questions regarding CSAC’s work on artificial intelligence.
