The Council of State Governments Justice Center (CSG), in
collaboration with the Council on Criminal Justice and Behavioral
Health (CCJBH), recently released a new report, “A
Statewide Look at Mental Health Diversion: Recommendations to
California’s CCJBH (June 2024).” The report analyzes California’s
mental health diversion efforts, highlights the effectiveness of
current policies, and provides recommendations to scale and
standardize diversion practices across the state. The report
concludes with 23 policy recommendations related to increasing
access to diversion, connecting people to appropriate
community-based treatment, and expanding, strengthening, and
standardizing mental health diversion throughout California. The
