Now Available: Free CalRx-Branded Naloxone Nasal Spray

July 11, 2024

For those interested, Governor Newsom has announced the availability of CalRx®-branded over-the-counter naloxone HCL nasal spray, a life-saving opioid reversal drug. Eligible organizations, including first responders, community groups, schools, hospitals, and local governments, can now apply to receive this medication for free through the Naloxone Distribution Project (NDP).

This initiative, part of the Governor’s Master Plan for Tackling the Fentanyl and Opioid Crises, aims to make naloxone more accessible and affordable.

California’s partnership with Amneal Pharmaceuticals has resulted in a 40% reduction in the purchase price, enabling the state to distribute approximately 24,000 units in May alone, leading to significant savings. Since the NDP’s inception in 2018, over 4.4 million units have been distributed, saving more than 277,000 lives. This effort underscores California’s commitment to combating the opioid epidemic by empowering communities with the tools necessary to reverse overdoses effectively.

For more information or to apply, visit the NDP website or contact Naloxone@dhcs.ca.gov.
