Ready, Set, Nerd Out! Updated County Data and Demographics Available Through CSAC’s DataPile

November 2, 2023

Have you ever wondered how many registered voters are in your county? Or which county had the most farm acres planted this season? Or how many children live in your county compared with a neighboring county? Or how many miles of public roads are in your community? CSAC has too! And now, updated answers to these burning questions and much more are available in CSAC’s DataPile.

The DataPile is a compilation of publicly available datapoints distilled to the county level. The new version contains the most up-to-date information that is currently available and updates the amazing data repository that former CSAC Legislative Advocate and data guru Geoffrey Neill originally built out. Available on CSAC’s website, this spreadsheet is separated into seven separate sheets consolidating current information about each county’s demographics, revenues and expenditures, caseloads, and much more.

Links for the source data are available by clicking on the headers of each dataset. These sources include, but are not limited to, the United States Census Bureau, California Department of Finance, the State Controller’s Office, California Secretary of State, California Department of Justice, United States Department of Agriculture, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, California Department of Social Services, plus many more. We recommend that you explore the source data as many state and federal agencies include historical data which may be useful.

While the DataPile spreadsheet is downloadable, we also recommend checking the DataPile’s website to ensure that you have the most current data available as we will endeavor to keep the data updated and expand the datasets as more information becomes available. We are anticipating a number of refinements and additions to the DataPile in the immediate future – stay tuned! For questions about the DataPile or to recommend additional publicly available datasets for inclusion, please contact Brian Cote.
