State Launches New California Maternal Health Blueprint, Strong Start & Beyond Initiative

September 19, 2024

This week, the Newsom Administration unveiled a new effort to improve reproductive and maternal health in collaboration with community, public, and private partners. Strong Start & Beyond, which is housed within the Office of the California Surgeon General, seeks to reduce California’s maternal mortality rate by 50% by December 2026. As part of the launch of this initiative, Governor Newsom proclaimed September 17, 2024, as “Strong Start & Beyond Day.”

This new effort aligns with the release of the California Maternal Health Blueprint, which will help guide outreach, education and other strategies. The Blueprint was developed with input by the Perinatal Advisory Group, comprised of individuals representing healthcare, business, philanthropy, and technology sectors. In addition to the Blueprint, California has also released educational and media resources on their Strong Start & Beyond webpage.
