Ashland has a history of providing and maintaining a world-class parks and recreation system. The City owns 785 acres of parkland (including 463 acres of forest land and 30 miles of trails) and offers a variety of recreational facilities and programs for all ages and interests, including: 17 developed parks and 34 park properties, athletic fields, open space, senior center, ice rink, pool, dog park, tennis courts, skate park, community gardens and nature center. The jewel of the parks system is 93-acre Lithia Park, which attracts over one million visitors a year.

The Department is overseen by a five-member elected Parks and Recreation Commission. The Director reports to the Commission and oversees three divisions, Parks, Recreation and Golf, a biennial budget of $15.8 million and supervises two Superintendents who lead a dedicated and talented team of 43 employees and numerous seasonal employees.
