Description:
THE POSITION: Under general direction, the Principal Accountant performs complex working supervisory functions in a designated fiscal program area. Responsibilities include supervising and directing staff engaged in professional or technical accounting tasks within a department or agency. While the role may involve direct supervision of staff, it can also focus on expert-level responsibilities for planning, organizing, and directing major finance programs or functions. As the highest level in the Accountant series, the Principal Accountant balances complex accounting tasks with a focus on operations rather than policy. This position may lead fiscal staff in smaller departments or manage significant finance initiatives, ensuring effective fiscal management and compliance within the organization. The Principal Accountant plays a crucial role in enhancing financial operations, overseeing processes, and contributing to the overall financial integrity of the department or agency.
Qualifications:
EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE: Any combination of education and experience which has led to the acquisition of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of qualifying education and experience includes: EDUCATION: Completion of a Bachelor’s degree with at least eighteen semester units of college-level accounting coursework, including two semesters of Intermediate Accounting; AND five years of progressively responsible professional accounting experience, one year of which must be at the lead or supervisory level; OR two years as a Senior Accountant for the County of Ventura. Education/Experience Substitution: Professional level accounting experience may be substituted for up to two years of undergraduate education on a year-for-year basis, provided the candidate possesses at least eighteen semester units of college-level accounting coursework, including two semesters of Intermediate Accounting. NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: • Verification of coursework and depending on the position, a valid California driver license. Verification of the required college degree and college-level coursework is required.
