Salary:
The current salary range for the PROGRAM DIRECTOR position is $100,000 – $150,000 annually, depending on professional experience.
Description:
The California Counties Foundation (Foundation) is looking for a dynamic and experienced Program Director for a limited-term role to oversee the strategic direction and execution of key initiatives. This position is expected to last for up to 36 months, with the possibility of extension based on project needs and funding.
The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of delivering and managing all facets of leadership and education programs, and the ability to build collaborative partnerships. In this role, you will be responsible for setting long-term goals, managing high-level leadership and education program operations, and ensuring the sustainability and success of multiple education and training programs. You will work closely with the executive team to develop new initiatives and enhance existing ones while overseeing budgets, staff, and key relationships.
Key Responsibilities of This Role
- Provide strategic leadership for the development and delivery of education and leadership programs.
- Lead and supervise staff to ensure the successful execution of programs and initiatives.
- Drive the expansion and innovation of program offerings to meet emerging needs within the Foundation and across the counties.
- Oversee budgeting, financial management, and fund allocation for all programs, ensuring financial sustainability.
- Serve as the primary liaison between the Foundation and external partners, including host counties, affiliates, and stakeholders.
- Represent the Foundation at high-level meetings, conferences, and events to promote the organization’s initiatives.
- Report on program performance, outcomes, and strategic goals to the executive team and Board of Directors.
- Lead efforts to secure funding, including identifying and pursuing grants and other fundraising opportunities.
- Ensure that programs comply with all relevant regulations, standards, and best practices.
- Facilitate the continuous improvement of programs through rigorous evaluation and feedback mechanisms.
Typical Duties
- Provide oversight of the planning, development, and implementation of educational programs, workshops, and seminars.
- Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to assess training needs and develop relevant programming.
- Oversee the management of and deliver online and in-person trainings, including site selection, contracting, curriculum development, and event logistics.
- Develop and manage comprehensive budgets for all programs, ensuring cost-effective delivery and adherence to financial targets.
- Oversee the performance of key program and support staff, ensuring their alignment with organizational goals and priorities.
- Lead marketing and outreach efforts to promote Foundation programs, including presentations, webinars, and publications.
- Produce annual and program-specific reports for internal and external stakeholders.
- Engage in public speaking and thought leadership activities related to public service, leadership, and governance.
- Present on public service leadership or governance topics to senior executives and/or be an executive coach.
- Travel is required
Knowledge Required
- Expertise in executive-level professional development, including program design, delivery, and evaluation.
- Familiarity with modern online communication and networking tools such as SurveyMonkey, MailChimp, and Constant Contact.
- Strong knowledge of grant writing and proposal development for educational or leadership programs.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Master’s degree in public administration, leadership, organizational behavior, or a related field.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in managing or directing large-scale education or training programs, with a strong background in program development and execution.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex budgets and ensure financial accountability.
- Experience in leading and developing high-performing teams.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders and represent the organization effectively.
Preferred Skills and Qualifications
- Proven experience in securing grants and external funding for programmatic growth.
- Executive coaching experience or certification is a plus.
- Knowledge of county government operations and public administration is highly desirable.
Physical Requirements:
Sedentary work: Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. This role involves sitting most of the time, with occasional walking and standing.
Employment Terms:
This is a limited-term position expected to last for 36 months, with the possibility of extension based on funding and project needs. Please note, this position is contingent upon ongoing funding, and the contract funding for this role may be terminated with 10 days’ notice. Travel is required.
