California Counties Statement to Governor’s Remarks
August 13, 2024
In response to remarks made by the Governor threatening to cut local government funding for not clearing homeless encampments aggressively enough, the California State Association of Counties issued the following statement:
“California’s counties are – and have been – doing the hard work in our communities to address homelessness.
“Day in and day out, we are on the front lines, working tirelessly providing treatment and care to vulnerable Californians. This work is challenging and unrelenting, but it is focused on achieving meaningful progress on the ground. Every. Single. Day.
“Threatening to withhold funding is not a solution; it only jeopardizes the progress we’ve made and simply ensures more residents remain homeless. To affect real change, sustained and coordinated efforts and support across all levels of government are needed.
“We all agree progress must continue. It is simply the right thing to do.”
