County of Calaveras v. Calaveras County Superior Court (13CV39804):
In November 2013, the Calaveras County Superior Court moved into a new court facility that is six times larger than its old building. The move ultimately triggered this legal action to determine whether security costs for a new courthouse which are in excess of the allocation provided to counties under Realignment are theobligation of the county general fund, or whether the court is authorized to pay for the increased security from its own funding. CSAC’s brief, which was drafted by William Pettingill in the San Diego County Counsel’s Office, argues that the Court Security Act of 2012 authorizes the courts to pay for such programmatic changes, and that the Act specifically protects counties from this type of cost increase.
