Jackson v. Barnes (14-542)
CSAC has filed a brief urging the United States Supreme Court to review a Ninth Circuit decision concluding that counties can be held civilly liable to criminal defendants who are convicted based on statements obtained in violation of their Miranda rights, notwithstanding the rule in California that Sheriffs are state, not county, actors when performing their investigatory duties. CSAC’s brief was drafted by Morris Hill and Stephanie Karnavas in the San Diego County Counsel’s Office.
