Juan C. Perez, Chief Operating Officer
Riverside County
July 26, 2021
Do you have any words of advice for someone interested in becoming a County COO?
Lead with a sense of optimism, humility, flexibility, a positive attitude, and an earnest desire to serve others. Be a life-long learner and an active listener with a curious mind. Understand how very blessed we are to be able to make a positive difference in people’s lives around us, and be joyful in that knowledge, steadfast in your perseverance, and mindful of our responsibilities as public servants.
Please describe your role with your County.
Working in partnership with 25 elected or appointed Department Heads, I provide operational support to the County CEO through overseeing the constituent services operation of Riverside County government. My duties include collaborating with our elected Sheriff and District Attorney, other public safety partners such as Fire, Probation, Public Defender, and Emergency Management; our Human Services Portfolio; our Public Works and Community Services Portfolio; and Economic Development and the Registrar of Voters.
Is your glass half-full, or half-empty?
The glass is always half-full. An important aspect of leadership is that we look to the future with a spirit of optimism, a can-do attitude, and the desire and perseverance to work through whatever challenges come our way.
What’s your proudest professional or personal accomplishment?
My proudest accomplishment is helping to grow the next generation of public servants, to help provide long-term stability and continuity for our County government, as we look to continue to meet the needs of our constituents into the future.
Who is your hero?
My parents. They brought their young family to our wonderful country to start life anew, so that their children would be able to have a free, brighter and better future, and worked hard and sacrificed all of their lives to contribute to our well-being and society.
