San Diego County Supervisor Greg Cox has announced his candidacy for NACo Second Vice President. The election is scheduled for July during the Association’s annual conference which will be held in California this year.

Supervisor Cox has served in local government for the past 40 years and been on the San Diego County board for the past two decades. During his public career, he was elected President of CSAC as well as the League of California Cities. He has been a leader on behalf of our nationally recognized California county family for many years and is now ready to build on that leadership experience as an officer for NACo, in which he has been active since 2006.

“I truly love local government; it is the level of government that can roll up its sleeves and get to work, where you have to work collaboratively to solve problems and make a difference. It’s also the level of government at which the focus is on policy and projects and how they affect our residents, not politics,” Supervisor Cox said. “I believe that counties are the level of government that make a real difference in the lives of our citizens.”

During the past 10 years, Supervisor Cox has served in a variety of capacities at NACo, including as member of the Board of Directors; co-chairing the Governance and Structure Task Force; and serving on the Immigration Reform Task Force; Health System Reform Working Group; Methamphetamine Action Group; and Large Urban County Caucus (LUCC) Steering Committee.

“I’m prepared to share my passion and experience for bringing people together to create lasting solutions for all counties throughout the country, “ Supervisor Cox explained. “As NACo Second Vice President, I will strive to strengthen NACo’s existing partnerships and create new ones to further our leverage on key issues for counties. I also offer my breadth of experience in coalition building and finding solutions that work at the local level to create a strong voice for all counties.“

Other candidates for NACo Second Vice President include Liz Archuleta, a supervisor from Coconino County, Ariz.; and Robert Steele, a commissioner from Cooke County, Ill.

“It will be important for California to have a strong showing at the NACo Conference in Long Beach this July in order to support Greg,” said CSAC President Richard Forster. “This is an outstanding opportunity to strategically position California counties on the national stage and ensure our priorities are reflected in the national agenda. We want to see county supervisors from all 58 counties in attendance. Even at the national level we need to be one family, 58 strong.”
