SACRAMENTO – California State Association of Counties (CSAC) issues the following reaction to the State Senate Democratic Caucus Budget Proposal.
COVID-19 has plunged California into uncharted waters and our fiscal recovery will require new ways of thinking, governing and doing business. We appreciate the creativity showcased by Senate Democratic Caucus leaders in crafting a proposal featuring an attempt to stabilize communities and core safety net services while not hampering future recovery.
We look forward to learning more details of the Senate plan and working through the mechanics of the proposal. As California looks to recover from the many COVID-19 impacts on our economy and budget, we can’t ignore the critical role that California’s counties play in protecting public health and providing safety net services for vulnerable residents.
The County-State partnership is critical to mitigating these fiscal impacts and maintaining and enhancing capacity in these essential programs. Every County needs funding to ensure our public health departments can access testing and coordinate trained workers to track and isolate cases as restrictions are lifted. The same goes for the much needed social services and health workers protecting the at-risk elderly, youth, and disabled populations, while also providing shelter and services to those experiencing homelessness. CSAC looks forward to a continued, robust county-state partnership working with the Legislature, the Administration and Governor Newsom.
California State Association of Counties (CSAC) is the voice
of California’s 58 counties at the state and federal level.
