SACRAMENTO-After leading the California State Association of Counties (CSAC) for the past five years, Executive Director Matt Cate announced Thursday that he will be leaving the organization this spring to explore new opportunities in the private sector.
“I am proud of the work we have accomplished during my time at CSAC,” Cate said. “I’ve had the privilege of working closely with an amazing group of public servants who are truly committed to serving California’s 39 million residents. I’ve also been blessed to lead a talented staff who is wholly dedicated to the mission of serving our 58 counties.”
Cate has successfully led the Association during a number of legislative and budgetary challenges; in the past year alone, CSAC helped secure passage of SB 1 that is providing much-needed transportation revenue, successfully negotiated a new IHSS formula, defeated AB 1250 and convinced the Governor to veto SB 649. Internally, Cate has overseen organizational improvements, including bolstering the Association’s fiscal health, enhancing the association’s member services including significant growth of the CSAC Institute, and strengthening member outreach and communication.
“I’ve had the pleasure of working closely with Matt over the last several years and I can attest to his outstanding leadership on behalf of California’s counties,” said CSAC President and Kern County Supervisor Leticia Perez. “During his tenure as Executive Director, CSAC has become one of the most influential organizations in the Capitol Community. While we will definitely miss him, he leaves the organization well positioned to continue its work on behalf of counties and the 39 million Californian’s we serve.”
Cate said he is looking forward to exploring new opportunities in the private sector after 25 years in public service. While no specific departure date has been given, Cate said he would like to transition in the next couple of months. Please click here for an in-depth message from Cate about his departure from CSAC.
