One of the best things about being the President of CSAC is
hosting our Annual Meeting coming up in Palm Springs in Riverside
County. CSAC’s leadership and staff have put a lot of thought and
effort into making this a great meeting and the only thing I can
think of that would make it any better is for you to decide to
attend, if you haven’t already done so. It runs the week after
Thanksgiving, from November 29 through December 1.
It’s no secret that our Sierra Nevada forests are in big trouble.
We have more than 66 million dead trees in the mountains and
foothills of California—killed by a prolonged drought and an
onslaught of bark beetles. The images from the Southern and
Central Sierra are frightening. Acres and acres of pine trees are
orange and brown, dead, dying, dry. And the bark beetles are
moving north. As they kill entire stands of trees they move on to
new sections of forest.
Seeing is believing as the old saying goes. Maybe that’s why tree
mortality isn’t a bigger issue for more people. If you haven’t
seen it for yourself, it’s hard to believe that 29 million trees
have already died in our foothill and mountain counties, and many
more will probably die. So, I urge you to watch the video that’s
linked to this blog posting. In stark footage, it shows how
drought and bark beetles are having a disastrous impact on our
forests—especially Ponderosa Pines.
As a long-time rancher, I know that there is a cycle to life and
that no creature lives forever. Animals, people, we all have a
limited time on this earth. The same is true of trees. Although
some species can live for hundreds of years, even trees
eventually die. But now in forests up and down the state, we are
seeing the early and disastrous death of millions of trees. The
latest estimates indicate we have 29 million dead or dying trees
in California.
I know a lot of you have had the chance recently to spend time
with your families for the Christmas and New Year holidays. In
addition to savoring the new memories my family created this
holiday season, I am also thinking about the upcoming year as
CSAC President and what I would like to accomplish with my County
Family.
